Welcome to SPARK 2021, the digital startup competition that empowers
you to transform your boldest ideas into
viable products with real world impact.
Applications for 2021 are closed.
Use the unique opportunity to connect with students from different backgrounds: Computer Science, Design and many more. You will also have the chance to learn from successful local entrepreneurs that will guide you through the first steps as you develop your initial idea to a working business model. It should be noted here that the term business model is broadly defined. Business models that are financed by donations or public funds are also welcome! Get ready for a 9 week journey with plenty of insights and the chance to connect with the most interesting people from Freiburg. Who knows, maybe your future co-founder is among the fellow participants!
We want to encourage and inspire students from all kinds of disciplines to find innovative solutions to social and ecological problems. We offer you students a ‘playground’ for this and create the necessary framework through knowledge transfer and network expansion so that you can simply try out your ideas and let them flourish.
To ensure that you can gain all necessary skills to build a company we have composed a versatile program which includes “Events”, “Workshops” and “Community Events”. You can find an explanation of each definition as well as the entire SPARK program below!
See our program below.
In our opinion the complementary composition of a team is a key factor for its success. To ensure that every team has the abilities to build a working prototype we have multiple categories of participants. Please apply for the one you think is most suitable to you and your skillset:
You will never walk alone. In our program we will connect you and your team with a seasoned, successful and local entrepreneur or a person with special expertise. These persons have exactly the knowledge that you need to start a company from scratch. Throughout the competition they provide you with insights, help you with their network and they will constantly challenge your ideas. At the kickoff event we will match the right mentor for your venture.
More mentors will be added here soon.
What would a startup competition be without awards ...? Right that’s what we think too. We award prizes in three categories: Sustainability, Scalability and Social Impact. Each reward is associated with a trophy money of 2000€. Still the focus of this event is on cooperation and peer learning. You will see there is a huge potential in learning strategies and techniques from other participating teams!
Hey, nice to meet you! We, the Foundersclub Freiburg, are the local student initiative for green and social entrepreneurship. Our goal is to inspire students to start their own ventures. We foster the green & social entrepreneurial spirit through all kinds of events such as workshops, founding talks and startup trips.
Lately we have organized Unternehmenslust. The biggest startup talent matching in the region. There where 14 startups at the venue and had the chance to present themselves in front of over 140 students. Our members have very diverse backgrounds, from economics over medicine to theology, but they have one thing in common: they want to create value for the local startup ecosystem and learn how to become impactful entrepreneurs themselves.
Here you can see us in last year's SPARK Demo Day. LTR top: Yesim, Marina, Jurek, Flo, Blatti, Helena, Anna, Caro. LTR bottom: Kamal, Khani, Georgie, Julian, Johanna. First row: Bernie. Missing: Alex, Leonie, Dennis, Andreas, Leander, Simon, Lukas, Lenni, Nicola, Rene, Nicolas, Alexandra, Lea.

Standing on the shoulder of giants. We are very humbled that two outstanding personalities support us in the making of this startup adventure. We will benefit from their network, their expertise and their passion for innovation!
A huge thanks to our partners and supporters:
The KTUR project ("Knowledge Transfer Upper Rhine") is a trinational INTERREG project.
In addition to the University of Freiburg, eleven other universities and colleges in the Upper Rhine
region from Germany, France and Switzerland are involved. The goal of the twelve partner institutions is to
establish and expand a cross-border network in which all relevant actors from the transfer sector - from
research and science to intermediaries (such as business development agencies) to startups and companies - are
involved, learn from each other and initiate new impulses for the Upper Rhine Trinational Metropolitan Region
The University of Freiburg is responsible for the the measure "Startups/Founding at the Upper Rhine" and emphasizes on pilot projects which promote student entrepreneurship activities and networking. These include projects such as the PhD lunches (ktur.eu/en/ktur-phd-talks), a trinational summer school and, of course, the trinational SPARK ideas competition
